William Welch

Family

In 1819 Ann Welch is born, illegitimate daughter of Mary Welch.

These is a record of a christening of an Ann Welsh in Church Aston, Shropshire, on 17th of October 1819, ). Ann's mother is listed as Mary Welch, no father is listed.

In the 1841 census for Church Aston, Ann Welch aged 21 (a servant) is living at the same address in Pave Lane as John Welch aged 77 a farmer (I think it is farmer, it is difficult to read). At the same address is Elizabeth Lees aged 9. The 1841 does not give place of birth or relationship so this information is not available.

On the 15th of July 1842 William John Welch is born to Ann Welch, no father is recorded. The birth is recorded as taking place at Chetwyn Aston and the residence of the mother as Pave Lane.

On the 22nd of July 1842 William John Welsh is christened at Church Aston and again on the 1st of January 1843. Source: "Bishop's transcripts, 1681-1855 Church of England. Chapelry of Church-Aston (Edgmond, Shropshire)" from www.familysearch.com.

On the first of March 1843, Ann Welch died at Chetwynd Aston aged 23 of typhus fever. She is listed as the illegitimate daughter of Mary Welch. The death is registered by a Thomas Arkinstall who was present at the death and the death is registered on the second of March.

When his mother died in 1843 William would have been seven months old. John Welch (if he was still alive) would have been about 78. The age and wereabouts of his Grandmother Mary are unknown.

In 1861 (census) William Welch (the John has been dropped) born in Pave Lane, is recorded as living at Cheswardine in Shropshire, he is 18 years old, unmarried and an apprentice blacksmith. He is apprenticed to Joshua Edge 34, born in Chipnall Shropshire. In the same household are Joshua's wife Elizabeth, 25 and his son Charles Love Edge, 1.

William next appears in 1866, 23 years later, living in Burlam and marrying in Cheswardine.

I have a copy of William Welch's marriage certificate This lists William Welch's father as John Jones a labourer. William Married Elizabeth Millington who's father was Thomas Millington, on the 3rd of January 1866. The marriage took place at Cheswardine parish church (in the registration district of Market Drayton, but also not far from Newport and Stoke-on-Trent). Elizabeth's residence is given as Cheswardine, but Williams is given as Burlem. William and Elizabeth as both 23, William and both fathers are listed as labourers. William signs his name, but Elizabeth "makes her mark".

William next appears in the 1881 census.

At the time of the 1881 British Census William Welch was living at 9, Malt Lane, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.

William is listed as being 38 and born in Newport, Shropshire, (i.e. about 1843), at this time his is married to Elizabeth who is listed as 39 and born in Whitchurch, Shropshire.

Living with them are :-

From family oral history John is know as Jack and Annie as Ann, there was also a daughter Elizabeth too young to be listed in 1881.
