Elizabeth Millington's birth certificate gives her d.o.b. as 25th June 1841. Her father is Thomas Millington labourer, and her mother Elizabeth Millington formerly Elizabeth Mathews. Elizabeth's mother makes her mark and is living at Green Lane (Prees?, Whitchurch?).
I have a copy of the birth certificate for William John Welch which gives his date of birth as 15th of July 1842 and his mother's name as Ann Welch. The name and occupation of the father are left blank. The registration takes place on the 18th of August 1842, Ann made her mark. The place is given as Chetwynd Aston.
There is also record of the Christening of a William John Welsh, on the 1st of January 1843 at Church Aston in Shropshire. The christening record gives the place of residence of William's mother as Pave Lane (see the page linked to from the table above) This is just outside (South West) of Newport, Shropshire, and therefore a very good match for William. His mother is listed as Ann Welsh, no father is listed. The source for this is "Bishop's transcripts, 1681-1855 Church of England. Chapelry of Church-Aston (Edgmond, Shropshire.
I have a copy of William Welch's marriage certificate [this I am certain is my great-grandfather, there is no middle name of John]. This lists William Welch's father as John Jones a labourer. William Married Elizabeth Millington who's father was Thomas Millington, on the 3rd of January 1866. The marriage took place at Cheswardine parish church (in the registration district of Market Drayton, but also not far from Newport and Stoke-on-Trent). Elizabeth's residence is given as Cheswardine, but Williams is given as Burlem. William and Elizabeth as both 23, William and both fathers are listed as labourers. William signs his name, but Elizabeth "makes her mark". At 23 they would have had to have been born in about 1842.
I have a (copy) death certificate for William Welch for 18th of February 1883. His age is given as 40, his profession as Blacksmith. His wife Elizabeth suvived him. The doctor is E White Jones and the family are living at 11 Locket Lane, Longton. The cause of death is pnumonia.
There is a William Welch is is listed as 7, in Whitchurch but he born is Whitchurch and is with his parents Thomas (35) and Mary (31) so this is not 'our' William Welch.
However ther is a "Wm Welsh" aged 8 (born about 1843) born in Aston, Shropshire, living in Gnosall, Staffordshire with an Uncle and Aunt.
William Welch is the son of the unmarried Ann Welsh/Welch daughter of Mary Welch (before she was married). Mary had a sister Sarah born 9th of May 1790, born in Church Aston 9th of May 1790, and therefore would be about 60 or 61 at the time of the census. I did have a marriage listed for Sarah Welch to a John Smith, on the 28th of December 1824.
In 1861 (census) William Welch (the John has been dropped) born in Pave Lane, is recorded as living at Cheswardine in Shropshire, he is 18 years old, unmarried and an apprentice blacksmith. He is apprenticed to Joshua Edge 34, born in Chipnall Shropshire. In the same household are Joshua's wife Elizabeth, 25 and his son Charles Lever (or Love) Edge, 1.
At the time of the 1871 British Census William Welsh was living in St.James parish, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, at 26 Sheaf Par .....
William (head) is listed as being 28, Blacksmith, and born in Table Lane (Pave Lane), Shropshire, (i.e. about 1843), at this time his is married to Elizabeth (wife) who is listed as 29 and born in Preast, Shropshire.

From family oral history, John is know as Jack, and Annie as Ann.
This is despite trying every combination of spelling I could think of [Welch, Welsh, Walsh, Walch, William, Bill, Wm etc.]. Nor can I find a death certificate for Elizabeth Welch to match our Elizabeth welch (using the Free BMD web site).
There is a record of death for a William Welch, aged 4, in Stoke on Trent in the fourth quarter of 1897. I can only speculate that he might be a child of one of our Welch's.
Free BMD gives a death for an Elizabeth Welch in the 4th quarter of 1900 aged 49 in Wolstanton district (vol 6b, page 114) of Staffordshire, which includes Burslam. But this is the wife of a Spencer Welch, not our William.
There are other Pensons on the same page :-
Francis died first quarter 1881 in Newport Shropshire district / Staffordshire, vol 6a, page 585, aged 83.
Sarah died 2nd quarter 1883, Newport Shropshire district / Staffordshire, vol 6a, page 543, aged 92.
