In the 1901 census Thomas [26, born in Longton], is living at 37 lower Spring Road, Longton, Stoke on Trent. His occupation is listed as "Potters Saucer Maker".
With him were his wife, Hannah [22, born in Longton], listed as a "Potters Transferer".
His son William J [2, born in Longton].
His daughter Annie [1, born in Longton].
His son Joseph, [2 months, born in Longton].
There is a marriage of a William J Welch to a Annie E Bettany, in the district of Stoke and Wolston, Oct-Nov-Dec 1922, Vol 6b page 269. However, family tradition is that William married Nancy and had two children. Nancy and Edna.
Family oral tradition (from James Welch b.1921) was that his brother William (b.1899) was a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps.
However, a check with National Archives, reveals that William Welch was an aircraftsman 2nd class, he enroled on the 14th of December 1915 and was discharged on the 5th of December 1916 due to sickness, as per paragraph 392 XVI of the King's Regulations. His army number was 16461.
