In the 1881 census, Thomas Wall 37, a Coal Miner, is living at 4 Railway Side Ho, Ince-in-Makerfield (Wigan) with :-

• His wife Mary A, 33, and his children
• Elizabeth, 12
• Thomas, 10
• Catherine, 7
• Parnell (a daughter), 5
• Mary, 1

At 12 Railway Side Ho is a family named Aspinall, relations of the Jane Aspinall who was at the time of the 1881 census 40 and married to Richard Gerrard?. The head of the household is Thomas Aspinall 55, possibly a brother or cousin of Jane. The son of Richard Gerrard and Jane Aspinall, James Gerrard, went on to marry Elizabeth Walls (below).

In the 1901 census, James Gerrard is listed as living at 51, George Street Hindley, he is 37, working as a "Coal Hewer" and was born in Hindley.

Living with James are :-

• His wife Elizabeth, aged 32, listed as born in Wigan.
• His son Harry (not Henry) aged 2 born in Hindley
• His son Fredrick aged 10 months
• His Brother-in-Law Thomas Wall aged 30, born in Shevington, a labourer.

There is a record of a christening of a James Gerrard, father Charles Gerrard and mother Ann on the 31st of March 1867 in Wigan.

Since then I have recieved, from Christine Walls (Dec 2006)
"Hi just to let you know.Mary Ann Highton m 14-8-1866 Thomas Walls both aged 21 on marriage certificate, St Georges Church. Mary Ann's father Michael Highton occ Collier."
This eliminate my previous best fit of Robert Highton, Police Officer, and Jane (nee) Kirkham of Lee Lane, Horwich as parents of Mary Ann Highton.
