In 1579 Hugh O'Neil, Earl of Tir Eoghain (Tyrone) leads a war in Ulster against the English (and Welsh) monarcy in Ireland. Leading to the treaty of Mellifont in 1603. The English (and Welsh) monarcy decide to strengthen their positon in Ulster (which was Catholic and might attract support from Spain) by planting a Protestant colony. The colonisation of Uster started in 1610. The colony was based around "Planation Towns" which were fortified against attack. However, most of the colonists were not English Protestants but Scotish Presbyterians. Thus it was that Ulster became different, in its ethnic and religious mix, to the rest of Ireland. |
