Family oral history has Annie (wife of Michael Carroll) born in Wales (the cenus says Newport Monmouthshire) a welsh speaker and being brought up with her sister(s) in a convent after their mother died. One of the sisters stayed in the convent until she died, while the older sister(s) left and Annie married Michael Carroll.

I have a copy of the Marriage Certificate for Michael Carroll and Annie Lynes. They were married at St.Bendicts Hindley om the 17th of May 1880. Michael is 19 and a coal miner and Annie is 18. Both are living in Ward Street, Hindley. Michael's father is listed as Patrick a groom and Annie's father is listed as John Lynes, deceased, a labourer. The marriage is conducted by Father J C Murphy. Both Michael and Annie were able to sign their own names, as were the witnesses James Gibson and Alice Carroll.

I can not find a birth record for Annie. I have obtained a birth certificate for Ann Lions born 22nd March 1862 at Merthyr Tydfil, but her father is Patrick Lions, Labourer, not John Lynes. Her mother is Mary Lions (Sullivan). I have also obtained a birth certificate for Annie Lines, born 1st September 1861 in Worcester North. Her father's first name is illegible, but it is not John, her mother is Fanny Lines (Stanton). I have had the GRO run a search 1861 to 1863 in Newport with no result.

There is a death recorded for an Ellen Lynes in the first quarter of 1868, aged 29 in Newport Monmouthshire, volume 11a, page 111. This would have been when Annie was about 6 years of age. Which fits with the facts as we know them. I have the death certificate, it gives her name as Ellen Lynes died 26th December 1867, 29 years old. She is listed as a domestic servant. She died in the Union Workhouse, Newport (registration was on the 10th of January).

The 1881 has an Elizabeth Lynes born in about 1858 in Newport and living in Hindley, Lancashire. If she in Annie's sister then she would have been ten years old when their mother(?) died, born when Ellen was 19. Elizabeth is a live-in servant at 342 Hindley House (as is an Ada Barlow aged 17). The house is the home of Jon Waddington, an Oil Merchant and his family (wife and eight children)

I can find no record of another daughter, born in Newport, living in a convent (or anywhere) in the 1881 census.

I can not find a birth record for Annie, Elizabeth, or Ellen in the FreeBMD, or a marriage between John Lynes and Ellen. There are, however, death records for various John Lynes's in the FreeBMD. With only one good match. Aged 51 died in 3rd quarter 1875 (when the girls would have been 17 and 13 years old) which would mean a date of birth of about 1824, putting him 15 years older than Ellen. He died in Birmingham, however, the John Lynes we are looking for may be unrecorded ( Birmingham vol 6d page 33).

There is a birth record for a John Lynes in 3rd quarter 1838 in the district of Erpingham, volume 19 page 90 which is in Norfolk. This would make him about the right age, but from the wrong part of the country.

In 1881 there is one family of Lynes living in Newport Monmouth. And only one other Lynes born in Monmouthshire. They are :-

It is likely that this family would have been Catholics, but their Irish origins does not correspond with Annie being a Welsh speaker as is family oral tradition.

There are also a family named Lyne in St.Woollos, Monmouthshire, three of their children were born in Newport.
Also a family named Line in Llanover, Monmouthshire.
