In the 1881 census Mary A Wall's (née Highton) gives her place of birth as Wigan and her age as 33. Which would mean that she should have been born in 1848 in Wigan.
However, the only registered birth, I could initially find, near the right time and place is for Mary Highton 4 feb 1848 at Horwich.
This birth certificate states :- 4th Feb 1848 at Lee Lane Horwich, child Mary Highton, father Robert Highton, mother Jane Highton formerly Kirkham, father's occupation is Police Officer.

Since then I have recieved, from Christine Walls (Dec 2006)
"Hi just to let you know. Mary Ann Highton m 14-8-1866 Thomas Walls both aged 21 on marriage certificate, St Georges Church. Mary Ann's father Michael Highton occ Collier."

This eliminate my previous best fit of Robert Highton, Police Officer, and Jane (née) Kirkham of Lee Lane, Horwich as parents of Mary Ann Highton.
This new information:- that on her marriage certificate of 1866, she gives her age as 21, means that she was born in 1845. We also have her father's name as Michael Highton. With this we can elimiate some of the possible matches.
