There is a court document dated 1st of March 1793 which records an order placed on the father of an illegitimate child to pay the mother one shilling a week [my thanks to Joan Harrison for this lead] the child is named William, the father Gerard Gerard (a weaver of Westhoughton) and the mother is Jane Leigh. The child was born eight weeks before (i.e. at the end of December 1792 or start of January 1793).
Additional information from Thomas Gerard.
Note that Hindley in the 18th century would have been a chapel in the parish of Wigan, hence baptisms, wedding and funerals would be recorded as taking place in the 'parish of Wigan', but may have actually taken place in the Chapel of All Saints at Hindley. Thus "Wigan" may mean Hindley (or Aspull, Ince, Abram etc.).
At the wedding of Thomas Gerrard, a John Gerrard was a witness.
