About Wentnor

My thanks to Lesley Thomas for his booklet on Wentnor.

Wentor sits to the West of The Long Mynd in South Shropshire,
(and East of Linley Hill). To the East of the Long Mynd (1,695ft) is Church Stretton and the A49 road. The A49 runs from Hereford to Wigan. This fertile land has been lived in for a very very long time, there is a ridgeway path over the top of the Long Mynd. There are hill forts, celtic field patterns and iron age ringworks in the area. When the Romans arrived they quarried stone here for Viroconium Cornoviorum (modern Wroxeter) (4th largest town in Roman Britain) and build a road, part of which is now the A49. The Romans mined lead from the Stiperstones to the North.

The village it self sits on a hill with the river East Onny flowing North-South to the West and a stream, Criftin Brook, flowing North-South to the East.
