Place Names

The town of Castle Cary is in Somerset, see map, it is not far from the A37 (Fosse Way) and near the river Brue. The villages of Lovington, Bruton, Hornblotton, and East Penard are all not far away and the Cleaves family are associated with all of these places.

Marriage Certificate: Edward Cleaves

On the 16th of May 1858, at St Mary the Virgin Church, Cardiff, Edward Cleaves married Harriett Collins, they give their condition as Bachalor and Spinster. Edwards is a "wire rope maker" he is living at 10, West Church Street and his father is Samual Cleaves, Labourer. Harriet is living at 50 Bute Street, her father is James Collins, Butcher.

They give their ages as 23 (Edward) and 25 (Harriett) which would mean that they were born in 1835 and 1833 (not quite consistent with the census returns).

Witnesses are Edward Martin and Martha Derrick.

Samuel Cleves

Finding the parents of Edward Cleves has been a real problem. When we find Edward in the census (below) he is not with his parents, also He is not consistent about the place or year of his birth (this can be explained by his not growing up with his parents). However, from his marriage certificate we have a name (Samuel) for his father.

We best we can do is look for a Samuel Cleves (Cleaves, Cleeves etc.) who was alive in about 1830, who does not have a living son named Edward, and is somewhere near Castle Cary. A link by marriage to a family of Coles would also be good!

The BMD register does not start early enough and the IGI does not give us any candiates. The census will give us only those still alive in 1841 and later.

But there is a family of Cleves's living in Butcombe Somerset that seem a likely source of our Samuel.

    Edward Cleves

    Edward Cleves -Census Entries

    1841

At the time of the 1841 census "our" Edward Cleaves should be between 6 and 11 depending on which of his entries we believe. But the 1841 census has no Edward Cleves in that age bracket! The nearest matches are :-
    NameSurnameAgeBirth place
    EdwardCleve2 - 1839Skillgate, Somerset
    EdwardClive4 - 1837St.James, Middlesex
    EdwardCleaves15 - 1826Church Gresley, Somerset
    EdwardCleaves20 - 1821Pilton, Somerset

For the census 1841 the age of adults were often rounded up or down to the nearest ten. He would probably be in Somerset. Marital status and relationship arenot recorded.

Of these near matches, one is an Edward Clive, living in London and giving no place of birth and spelling his name Clive. I think that we can discount this one.

Another, is an Edward Cleve born 1839 in Skilgate, with him is Charity Cleve aged 4 (Charity is written clearly, but Edward is doubtful) they are in the household of a carpenter John ?Venn?.

There is an Edward Cleve aged 2, with a Charity Cleve (or Emily Cleve) aged 5, living with a family named Venn in Skilgate, Somerset.
There is a record of a christening of a Charity Ann Wood Cleves, at Crediton Parish Church in Somerset, 25 July 1820. Father Benjamin Cleave. mother Charity Ann. But this Charity Cleves would have been 20 at the time of the 1841 census!

There is a family named Cleeves in Butcomb Devon using the following christian names, Samuel, Unity, William, Edward Jehu, Emily, Agnes. But their Edward is born in Blagon in 1856.
There is an Edward Cleve aged 20 (ag.lab) with a family named Lambert in Pilton.

    1851

At the time of the 1851 census Edward Cleaves is listed as16 years old, his is living with his Aunt and Uncle William and Elizabeth Cole in Mill Lane, Parish of Castle Cary. The family is listed as :-

    Elizabeth COLESM57FCastle CaryWife

There is a William Coles born 12 Nov 1786 on the IGI, born in Weston, Somerset. Which matches the age of William Coles. His father is William COLE (no s) and his mother Elizabeth. The family are :-

  • William Coles, born about 12 November 1786, Weston, buried 31 March 1861 Weston
  • Elizabeth ?, born about 1805, Weston near Bath.
  • Ann Eliza Cole, born 1827, christened 5 March 1827, Weston
  • Elllen Cole, bor 1834, christened 30 Sept 1832,
  • Willaim Cole, born 1834, christned 5 Jan 1834 Weston

The father of this William Coles (12.Nov.1786) is listed as William Cole, born about 1750 in Weston, married about 1780
The mother of William Coles is listed as Elizabeth, born about 1751
Ann Eliza Cole married William Hathaway Davis
This information came from Gwen Allred of Canada.

If Edward a the nephew and his surname is not Coles, then he must be one of :-

    1. The son of a sister of William Coles, in which case there should be a marriage of Samuel Cleaves to a Cole. From the above family it would have to have been Martha, Catherine, or Elizabeth.
    2. The son of a brother of Elizabeth Coals (in which case Elizbeth Cole must have been Elizabeth Cleaves before she married).
    3. The son of a sister of Elizabeth Coals whom had married a Cleaves.
    4. Illegitimate.
William and Elizabeth probably married between 1810 and 1827.

None of these show a Coles marrying a Cleves. The most probabale marriage in the above list is Eliabeth Tidball.

There is a marriage recorded of a Samuel Cleaves (or Cleves) to a Unity Clark, 26 March 1817, at Bedminster, Somerset (source IGI). But no indication of a Clark marrying a Coles.

    1891 Census

There is a possible death recorded for Edward Cleves, in Cardiff, 2nd Quarter of 1891, aged 61(ref 11a 218)

Elaine Evans has seen research that gives :-

Samuel Cleves born in Hornblotton, no [date of] birth, but died in 1831and was married to Grace Corp. His father was William born in 1771 in Hornblotton. The tree then goes all the way back to Robert born in 1660 at East Pennard."

I have tried to confirm this, and the facts fit, plus there do not seem to be any other candidates. Samuel Cleaves senior had a son Samuel who would be a good candidate for the father of Edward, except that he has a son Edward who is living with him when our Edward is alive. However, at the time our Edward was conceived, Samuel Senior was still alive and therefore our Edward could be the son of Samuel Cleaves senior.

Therefore I have constructed the tree above on that assumption.

    Odd Fact

"William Cleaves" (with others) "Sentenced to Death last Assize was Reprieved & since received his Majestys Pardon on condition of being sent to the River Thames 1 year." from "Devon to Wit. A Calendar of the Prisoners in his Majestys High Gaol for the County of Devon at the General Quarter Sessions of the Peace held at the Castle of Exeter April 21st, 1784."

    Odd Fact

Old Bailey (ref:t17940219-44) in the case of some stolen soap, 19 February 1794 ; Samuel Cleves named as a "soap boiler" . The culprit, Thomas Plant, was sentenced to to transportation.
