Joe's father [John Carroll] was a very strict man and no one dared to say no to him. He was also jealous and often hit his wife. As Joe got older he threatened to kill his father if he hit his mother again. His father never did hit her after that.
Ellen was a devout Catholic. On Saturday she would prepare food for Sunday so that she didn't have to work on Sunday. She spent Sunday reading her prayer book. She had a very hard life with such a large family and a strict husband. She had the gift of foreseeing things to come by watching the flames in the fireplace. She also spoke of seeing an old lady ghost in their cellar.
The family members were very jolly people who loved to sing and dance Dad [Joe] was very athletic.
At the time of the 1881 British Census, John Carroll was listed as a coal miner, living with his wife Ellen, their daughter Mary E Carroll and son Joseph P Carroll at 145 Chapel Road, Oldham, Lancashire. All four are listed as having been born in Hindley.
The birth certificate for Mary Ellen Carroll, records that the family were living at Gaskill Street, Ladys Lane, Hindley. Ellen Carroll is listed as "formerly Roberts" John Carroll is give as "Coal Miner and Brickmaker Contractor".There is a record of a marriage between John Carroll (father Partick Carroll) and Ellen Roberts (father Jospeh Roberts) on the 21st of May 1877 at St.Benedicts. John Carroll's address is given as Gaskell Street and Ellen Roberts' as Castle Hill.
At the time of the 1891 British Cenus, John Carroll (35) was listed as a coal miner, living with his wife Ellen (35) and their children, Mary Ellen (13), Joseph P (10), Alice (8), Elizabeth (6) and Catherine (2). They are living at 11 Leyland Row.
The family are reported to have lived on Castle Hill.
There is a record of a burial of a John Carroll son of John Carroll, 11 days old, from 11 Brook Street on the 26th of July 1887.
There is a record of a burial of John Carroll, miner, aged 77 on the 20th of December 1930 (giving a date of brith about 1853). At the time of his death John was living at 2, Queen Street.
